Love, French rap thinks only of that. So much so that one of his new talents, Squidji, 22, calls his first album Oxytocin, one of the hormones that stimulates sexual pleasure and generates attachment. “It’s important to talk about love, it’s something that surrounds us, but the values of our generation are changing, explains the young man in his soft voice. The other day, I was chatting with a friend and she was asking me, “What do you think about polyamory? To be in a relationship with one person and to be in love with another. ” The time of our parents was more standardized: you get married, you have children. Our generation is no longer in the fashion: “We love each other, but we do what we want, we are free.” “
Accompanied by pianist Sofiane Pamart, he sing thus, on the title LOVE, “I want love but without you”. His music with a haunting tempo and his tangy timbre recall the first records of PartyNextDoor, Majid Jordan, this Canadian R’n’B that he listened to a lot and which, under the aegis of rapper Drake, helped to distill more emotions in American rap.
Squidji’s parents divorce while he is still a pre-teen. The kid lives between the 15e arrondissement of Paris, with his mother, restaurateur, and Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, in Val-de-Marne, with his father, mechanic, evangelist and “Crazy practitioner”, according to the son. “ I went to church every Sunday, he recounts. But, as a kid, I was a bit of a rebel, because at the same time there was “Téléfoot”. As I got used to it. The best time for me was when people were singing and dancing. Afterwards, I took a liking to it. That’s why it was important for me that there was a choir at the beginning and at the end of my first album. “
The postman’s tour
His passion for music comes from there, as well as long journeys in the Parisian suburbs in the father’s car, to the sounds of Congolese rumba and French song. At the time, Squidji was already listening to rap, copying the texts of 50 Cent, miming his way of rapping and moving in the clips. He bought his first microphone, posted his first songs on the SoundCloud sharing platform and very quickly got noticed by Twinsmatic, Booba’s DJs.
The teenager does not quit high school so far, passes a vocational baccalaureate, but that’s all. “I did not try to do other studies, he explains. I clicked, I told myself that stewart, that was not what I wanted to do. We only have one life, we might as well get into something that thrills. So I worked to pay for my studio sessions. ”
He goes on to do odd jobs: delivery man, flow regulator in the metro, stockist in a DIY store and postman, his favorite. “I got up at 6 am to be at the sorting center, I liked it. I put on my headphones and delivered my mail to the Champ-de-Mars. I saw the Eiffel Tower every morning listening to the sounds I had recorded the day before. ” Hence the romanticism of his first album, produced by Prinzly, Damso’s studio companion. Squidji does not intend to stop his exploration of love themes there and is already thinking about his second album. “I will talk about polyamory, but also the loves of my lesbian and gay friends. I want to listen to their stories for inspiration. “
