United States President Joe Biden is expected to announce a plan to distribute to the countries most in need, in coordination with Covax, 80 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, the chief of American diplomacy, Antony Blinken.
“In a few days, perhaps tomorrow, the president (Joe Biden) will announce in more detail the plan he has drawn up to distribute 80 million doses of vaccine around the world”Mr. Blinken said during a meeting at the US Embassy in San José, Costa Rica.
Coordination with Covax
“We will do everything in coordination with Covax, on scientific bases and according to the needs of the countries, without any political preconceptions”, also underlined the American Secretary of State, shortly before leaving Costa Rica where he made a two-day visit. The Covax system is an international group set up to ensure an equitable distribution of vaccines against Covid-19, in particular to low-income countries.
On the first day of his visit, Mr Blinken referred to an announcement about the distribution of vaccines within one to two weeks. “We are looking forward to the distribution [de vaccins par les Etats-Unis] and we hope to be included in this plan ”, then declared the President of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado.
The Central American country is currently the 6e country in the world with the highest contagion rate: 596 cases declared every day per 100,000 inhabitants during the last two weeks.
